For our next event on the 24th at the NYC Transmedia Meetup, we're launching some in-story social media. We are staring small, we have two characters committed to the social media launch, with some others floating around who may want to join in and may decide to hold off.

The two characters we're featuring will be those in the scene we're presenting; along with an interview with our Producer, Caitlin Burns, about what we're doing in the context of larger independent features. We're not going to talk about the specifics of those characters right now; though those of you brave and savvy enough to start with them early and start chatting with them on twitter could do so.

What we're going to talk about today is relevant as we go into production- Beginning to develop characters with actors.

First off: Actors!!!

Look at them, ACTING.

For those of you who are just starting out with directing, writing or producing, the idea of actually putting your master-work into the hands of actors can be daunting. It can be well neigh terrifying. This is especially true if you plan on doing some sort of social media. If you can get your actors on board to take some of the burden off writers and actually play with your twitter feeds, blogs, and so on, not only can you do more things, update more often and expand your property... you can do some of the work that usually only comes during rehearsals remotely.

Here are 10 reasons why In-Narrative Twitter Feed Collaborations are awesome:

Twitter collaboration between director, writer, and actor allows for character development that becomes part of your story's canon.
Twitter feeds are fun for your fans and let you flesh out your fictional character's interests.
Feeds can allow actors, writers and directors to playtest character directions with fans before putting them into scenes.
Twitter feeds allow productions to include sponsors and promote events and products associated with your I.P.
Twitter feeds and blogs can exist when no other new content is available, allowing fans to be involved in properties they love while production is happening, or between releases.
Actors, Directors and Writers can collaborate with other characters from other narratives to cross-promote and play.
Story elements can be seeded and explored prior to content releases.
Fans can develop strong affinities and direct relationships with your characters and storylines.
Fans and audience members can pose ideas that can be woven into the canon of your narrative.
Twitter Feeds will bring attention to your property that you would not get otherwise, building your audience and potentially garnering press attention.

Here are 5 pitfalls to look out for:

Figure out how much time each person is willing to put towards the social media project at the beginning and be realistic-- Be aware that twitter and other types of blogging involve timestamps and so, are a different type of time commitment.
Set up a hierarchy of approvals-- Producers and Directors must be able to administrate content, and be the ultimate arbiters of the content presented.
Establish guidelines for content early-- Know how much profanity, how far you want to take jokes, and what is and isn't appropriate at the outset and make sure people know those baselines.
Expect that your opinions may change-- Whether you're the director, actor, writer or producer, what you think about the content online will probably change a lot over the course of the production. Productions on the Internet have an organic quality that is often better to embrace than fight.
Set up regular meetings to talk about the twitter/blog system's process and to resolve disagreements-- Hopefully you'll avoid a bunch of angry text messages from 4 different people when you're out to dinner... or away from a computer. Problems WILL crop up, everyone should know there is a time and place to deal with them.

At the end of the day, online narrative collaborations can be a lot of fun, just remember that a smart person learns from their mistakes and that a wise person learns from the mistakes of others. With that in mind, tell me what we've forgotten from your own experiences in the comments.

As we embark on our very first piece, an Election Special! we're going to take a bit of time to tell you just how it came about:

Firstly, you're going to ask. How on earth did you get a political candidate to do a piece on Velociraptor Awareness? Our answer is... It's a little surprising we're the first ones to do so.

The second thing you're going to ask is, wait, he is really running for office? and he decided to do a Velociraptor Awareness spot? The answer is yes and yes, George Martinez was and is seriously running for office in New York's 12th Congressional District. Election day is Tuesday, November 2, 2010.

If you'll note, this is pretty much exactly the core of hipness in New York City and a breeding ground for creatives of all stripes. Obviously, George Martinez is a man who knows his potential constituents.

Our only regret is that we were unable to get this sort out before the Democratic Primary, because he was unable to raise the funds and assemble the full number of signatures necessary to get his name on the ballot for election. More on all that can be found at our Interview on the core site, which goes into depth on how one runs for office, how to get involved and the specific troubles faced in the 2010 campaign.

But on to production... since this is the production blog and all. Once we had gotten George and his campaign on board, we drafted the script with campaign staff and George to reflect both the most meaningful issues in his campaign and the funniest material possible. We think we succeeded.

From there we shot the whole thing in two mornings. The piece one day and then the interview after we had a chance to chat further after shooting the spot. We borrowed a camera from a friend (who we love dearly, watch her movie!!!!) had another friend do the tape transfer (you still haven't told me what baked good you want in barter-C) and then edited the whole thing on the iMovie software that came with a laptop, though we're considering updating that to a newer version.

The final bit of magic came when one of our colleges, Adam Nash, watched the roughs over my shoulder and created the sound effects out of the goodness of his heart.

We hope you like the spot as much as we do it was very fun to make and we hope it inspires you to do something, even and especially if it's to throw down and help us out with Jurassic Park Slope, or even better, to help George Martinez after the election organize in and around the Brooklyn community, or to get involved wherever you may be.

Both Psychology Today and The New York Times are hatin' on hipsters this week.

Behold the hipster, the stylishly disaffected breed of twentysomethings whose fog of twee whimsy envelopes Williamsburg and the East Village. Most who encounter the hipster in its natural habitat respond in one of two ways: derision or ridicule.

But science does not cast judgment. Its goal is to explore and explain dispassionately, whether the object of study be the noble eagle or the lowly nematode. So what does science have to tell us about this fascinatingly misunderstood breed, the indigenous North American hipster?

Surprisingly much.

Even if some traditional milestones are never reached, one thing is clear: Getting to what we would generally call adulthood is happening later than ever. But why? That’s the subject of lively debate among policy makers and academics. To some, what we’re seeing is a transient epiphenomenon, the byproduct of cultural and economic forces. To others, the longer road to adulthood signifies something deep, durable and maybe better-suited to our neurological hard-wiring. What we’re seeing, they insist, is the dawning of a new life stage — a stage that all of us need to adjust to.

So, aside from cracking open a tasty bottle of haterade, the mature thing to do is to tighten one's chucks, push up their lensless glasses and take on the intellectual thrashing of the Grey Lady and the psychological establishment with well worded arguments of their own, like Ms. Monson here, read the whole thing, no quoted piece I can put here does it justice, but it's worth the read, trust me.

Jurassic Parq: The Broadway Musical: our Review

If you're a fan of Dinosaurs, Watching Things, Comedy or Life in General (and I hope you're a fan of at least one because otherwise why are you here?) you will LOVE Jurassic Parq: The Broadway Musical.

Currently playing as part of the New York International Fringe Festival, this musical is utterly phenomenal. The JPS team went last night and ENDANGERED OUR VERY LIVES FROM LAUGHTER. It was that funny. For those of you who didn't go with us, or those of you who live too far away and are not committed enough to Dinosaur Comedies to fly in to NY just to see a play that may or may not be sold out by the time you get here, you can read below the observations of Steele Filipek and Caitlin Burns, Producers of Jurassic Park Slope and former students of THEATRE! reviewing the whole thing here, right now, once I stop typing this paragraph and start typing the rest of this post:

Caitlin Burns:
Now for those of you who haven't read our somewhat redundant posts about who we are and how we started working together on hilarious comedy and high concept transmedia, Steele and I met on our very first day of college both of us wide-eyed students of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and both of us excited about the prospect of working on proper high minded legitimate theatre. I was an acting student with an eye towards design and producing, and Steele was a part of the Dramatic Writing Department. We became fast friends, watched a lot of B-movies and were involved in many productions of varying degrees of seriousness and nudity. So when we go to a play we go with the same sort of commitment to tearing it apart as insufferable film majors (you know who you are). Rarely is a piece of work so amazing and wonderful that it lives up to the expectations we set up for it before entering the Theatre.

Jurassic Parq: The Broadway Musical lived up to our highest expectations

and melted our faces off with awesome no less than 6 times.

Steele Filipek:

You thought you knew the story of Jurassic Park... but that was the book or movie or video game or comic book or what have you... with a "K". Jurassic Parq takes your preconceived notions of dinosaurs running rampant and their sexual identities and boldly splices in Jazz Dance, Glitter and Frog DNA. To describe it further would be an injustice. Rest assured that it is the best off-Broadway Broadway Dinosaur Musical I have ever seen.

Caitlin Burns:

The sheer breadth of inside jokes that we will now be bandying about the office from this single play is probably enough to justify some sort of disciplinary action by our employers, and yet we CANNOT STOP. Also, on a personal joke, I really really really want to thank them for suggesting that there was a Tyrannosaurus Rex named Caitlin. Best use of my name in years. The choreography was super-incredibly well done and I can never watch Law & Order: SVU again without thinking of Mary Ellen Ashley as the Velociraptor of Science.

Steele Filipek:

That is not to say there are no flaws with the play. The structure was off at a few points and a couple of the jokes were either eaten by laughter or died on the spot.

Caitlin Burns:

I'd say eviscerated really, I think you're student of Dramatic Writing! it out a bit here.

Steele Filipek:

Fair Enough, these are but quibbles. As long as you go into Jurassic Parq, with a "q", with an open mind and possibly a little bit of booze in your gizzard you're going to party like it's the Mesozoic Era. I now realize that that was a really lame joke.

Caitlin Burns:

That's Ok, Steele. I'd like to take this opportunity to nominate Jurassic Parq: The Broadway Musical for the Tony Award for Best Use of Sparkly Glitter.

Steele Filipek:

As Glitter: The Musical will not be premiering until early 2011 I'd say this musical is the early frontrunner for that award.

Caitlin Burns:

With that in mind, we'll be covering a finger puppet in sequins and sending it off to you, Jurassic Parq: The Broadway Musical, just as soon as you contact us with your name, address and bank account information.

Jurassic Park Slope involves some hilarious commentary on hipster culture- as do many blogs, sites, photo pools, and books (many of which you link to from your JPS feeds). What do you think makes hipsters such a rich source of entertainment?
I think the fact that being a hipster is not something that many people are willing to own up to is a big part of what makes it hilarious. I have yet to meet someone who sincerely has committed themselves to being a hipster in real life, and I have thrown parties in Brooklyn for years. Hipness is never in the eye of the beholder and the hipster aesthetic is very much about ridiculousness. Whether it’s putting on a thrillingly tacky pair of sunglasses or trying to make the most cuttingly witty remark about someone’s tight jeans there’s an aspect of the entire subculture that is about performance. At our last shoot we were wondering aloud just how many people had dressed up for film shoots today and the answer was “When you’re a hipster, every day is a film shoot.”

We’re making this film that will be distributed through phone application, but it’s more than a movie. Jurassic Park Slope is a terrifying(ly hilarious) experience across different media.

The core of JPS will be in the app. Pieces will be unlocked at points throughout Williamsburg, with additional footage online (in case one can’t get to Brooklyn), all unlockable by geolocation or solving puzzles and finding things at physical locations (bars, businesses etc...). At the same time it has already become a community of artists working together to create a way to get their art out into the public eye.

WHY DO YOU CARE?

We are looking for musicians and bands who might be interested in contributing to our soundtrack in exchange for cross-promotion and IMMORTALITY IN FILM™. Our shooting schedule culminates at an event/party/concert with the bands involved in mid-September where everyone’s work is showcased. This whole projects promises to be more fun than you can shake a stick at… unless that’s your thing, in which case, shake away.

We’re creating live events to both enhance our footage and to have awesome, fun experiences. We need places to show up, music for our movie, promos and songs that place in our fictional world. Want to make a music video? We have resources you might not. Want to bring more people to your concert? Invite us and we'll bring our list. Want your music to live on long after your death as the overture to a dinosaur comedy? You know you're game.

The Story:

It was finally Spring and the cold of Winter was forgotten. Winkel & Balktick set out to explore more of Brooklyn’s forgotten frontiers. While bathing in Upper New York Bay, a low-slung fortification along the shore caught their eye. They blazed a trail over to its edifice and were amazed by their discovery.

On Saturday, June 19th, join scoutmasters Winkel & Balktick on a warehouse wilderness campout. From 10pm till sunrise, lucky scouts will explore a hinterland of revelry and imagination. Jamboree the night away with rustic beats, illuminating art installations, cozy tents, hearty mountain provisions and the most jubilant troop this side of the East River.

A Star is Born: part 1

Watch as a raptor becomes a terrifying reality.

For our costumes the most pressing concern is expense, style and of course heat because we're filming in summer, for all those reasons we chose wire-wrapped in plaster over newspaper paper maché or latex casting. Also, What Would Ed Wood Do?

So, I acquired some wrapped 20-gauge galvanized wire, some masking tape and wire cutters, all things available at any hardware store. Then I looked at a picture of a raptor skull:

Once you have a good idea of the shape you can figure out what the skeleton of your headpieces should look like. So, find yourself a base (I used this cheap cowboy hat) and start building a wire-frame.

The wire frame is the guide for the shape of the plaster, using a hat means you need to worry less about comfort. Finally, make sure that you aren't horribly unbalancing your structure by putting too much weight too far forward or backward someone has to wear this.

Other Considerations:

Wires poking into someone's head.

Can the person wearing this breathe?

Can they see?

Are you making this too heavy?

Is your hat going to fit the person wearing this's head?

Are you listening to classic rock or metal because this is going to be so cool it will rock your face off?

Next Step:

Once you have your frame in place, wrap the joints of the wire with masking tape. If you're feeling really sassy you can also reinforce those joints with hot glue, but that adds weight and the plaster you will apply later will reinforce the structure as well.

Once you have the joints wrapped, wrap the entire wire frame so you have more surface area to attach plaster to.

Next, create the connective tissue of your Raptor's face, look at a picture of what those angles are going to look like, and then use tape to create the surface planes you'll want.

Then, you're ready to start plastering. BUT WAIT STOP, first lay down something like trash bags in order to keep the mess at a minimum and so the plaster doesn't stick to surfaces. Plaster wrapping is pretty much like paper maché, which you may remember from preschool.

The big difference is materials, Rigid Wrap or Plaster Gauze Wrap, like the stuff that is used for casts, is available at craft shops, art stores, medical supply stores and amazon. It dries lighter than newspaper and is easier to manipulate. It's not all that expensive either, especially considering that all your expenses so far have been galvanized wire and a hat.

So cut your wrap into small strips, dip it in water and begin wrapping it around the wire frame.

You may want to let it dry in stages so that you can better attach wet plaster in the shape you want.

Once you're done sculpting, let the whole thing dry overnight, at least 8 hours so it's really solid.

While the head is drying you can throw together the rest of the costume (part 2). We used a foam pool noodle for the tail. When putting together the rest of our costume our concerns were heat, the ability to move, and portability. We won't have fancy wardrobe trucks, in fact, I think we'll be lucky if we take taxis to shoot locations, so the ability to fold this and carry it is pretty essential.

Once it's dry, make extra sure that it is dry, then take it off whatever you used to prop it up while it was drying, CAREFULLY. Then, try it on someone's head and get ready to have your mind blown.

Jurassic Park Slope is an interactive experience, it not only asks for audience participation, it requires it to produce its final product. We're all bored with passive entertainment and want to create something active where fans have ownership and share in the experience from day one until long after the final product's release.

This project asks its audience to join the creators on the streets and at parties, to share their own footage, ideas, photos and to create stories of their own to add to the fictional world.

We want people to dress like dinosaurs, join us at events, help us film and share their ideas and experience online. Why do we want to share the process? It's fun and attainable.

Our aesthetic is easy to plug in to, and this type of experience-making is possible with limited means and a very small budget. Not only do we want you to help us make our project better, we want you to create the next one, make it even better than ours and to pitch in when you make it.

A parody homagé to the 1993 film Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park Slope takes characters based on those of the film, putting them into the new perils of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Instead of Paleontologists traveling to the world's most amazing amusement park, where nothing can go wrong, Jurassic Park Slope takes its characters to Brooklyn’s in search of the greatest loft party ever… where nothing can go wrong. While the mysterious, exotic islands of Costa Rica house wonders unimaginable and Williamsburg’s streets pose indignities and fashion eccentricities that defy understanding, the dangers both groups face are the same… Dinosaurs!

Caitlin Burns

As Transmedia Producer and Editorial Lead at Starlight Runner Entertainment for 6 years, Caitlin Burns creates and influences rich fictional universes that are readily familiar to millions. An expert at transmedia storytelling as well as what makes a storyline rich, immersive and resonant, she has been involved in strategic planning and production of video games, comic book series, movies, toys and animation for world-class franchises.   

Her background in theatrical design and grand immersive events gives her a particular insight into the production processes across many creative boundaries, easily conversing with people of different specialties and integrating their work into a cohesive whole. Her costumes and events have been seen and enjoyed by thousands in and around New York City, some of her accessories have made their way to the runways of New York’s Fashion Week and her Jewelry has been profiled internationally.  

Steele Tyler Filipek

Steele Tyler Filipek has been an active, professional writer since graduating from New York University in 2006. In addition to his work for Starlight Runner Entertainment, he has had plays produced in both the United States and England, published numerous short stories, written children's books, produced sketch comedy, and is the writer of the comic book, Tiara: Mistress of Time.
